Gemstones are one of the most talked-about “remedies” in Vedic astrology. They are also one of the most misunderstood. This article explains the tradition, and the sensible questions to ask before buying one.
The traditional idea
In traditional Vedic astrology, each planet is associated with a particular gemstone. The belief is that wearing the stone connected to a planet is meant to support the qualities associated with that planet in your chart.
Traditional associations
- Sun: ruby
- Moon: pearl
- Mars: red coral
- Mercury: emerald
- Jupiter: yellow sapphire
- Venus: diamond
- Saturn: blue sapphire
- Rahu: hessonite (gomed)
- Ketu: cat’s eye (lehsunia)
Which stone, if any, is suggested depends on the astrologer’s reading of your whole chart, not just your sun sign. Traditions and opinions differ between practitioners.
Approach with care
There is no scientific evidence that gemstones change life outcomes, and the decision to wear one is a personal choice. Stones can also be costly. A few sensible principles:
- Never feel pressured to buy anything. A good astrologer will explain the reasoning and respect your decision.
- Ask why a particular stone is being suggested and what the alternatives are.
- Buy only from a reputable seller who can tell you what the stone actually is.
- Treat a gemstone as a personal or cultural practice, not a guarantee.
Other traditional practices
Gemstones are only one part of the tradition. Many people prefer simpler practices such as meditation, mantra chanting, charity and the use of Rudraksha beads, which are also part of the Vedic tradition.
